With their new album “Hedges Against The Night”, The New Shining launch a strong

sequel to their debut album of 2008. It’s no wonder 3FM’s Giel Beelen (Holland’s

no.1 DJ) called the new single “ShadowCast” ‘innovative’.

 

This 3-man strong Dutch band with an international sound worked really hard this last year

and managed to make a name for themselves. In no time they were named Serious Talent by

national radio station 3FM and their album got laudatory reviews all over the world.

By the end of 2008 The New Shining even got a spot in the top 10 of the American alternative

chart. “Despite the success, we had to fight our way through”, according to band leader Nax,

“however, we have a rock solid faith in the music we make and we’re greatly determined”.

The New Shining was founded in the summer of 2006. However, the three band members,

Nax (vocals and guitar), R (bass and backing vocals) and Vince (drums) had been playing

together in various bands for the last 10 years. In 2006 the three of them decided to continue

as a threesome under another name. That was the first time Nax took on the vocals, next to

playing the guitar. This turned out to be a perfect move. For the first time everything seemed

to fall into place.

 

After releasing “Supernatural Showdown” in 2008, the band quickly went back to writing. “We had

the distinct feeling that we had more in us. The process of making a first album taught us a lot. We

know, better than before, which way to go. By playing ‘live’ a lot, you get to recognize your strong

points, which we wanted to develop, like writing good melodies, catchy choruses and the singalong

quality in a song”. One thing remained the same: as always a great deal was written, but

only the absolute best got selected to form a balanced and powerful album. The lyrics and the

music on this new album bring you a mixture of melancholy and hope. “Emotions become visible

on this album, and this also explains the album’s title’”, says writer Nax. “A passage in the book

‘Duma’ by Stephen King really got to me: ’Edgar, does anything make you happy?’ ’I used to

sketch.’ ’Take it up again. You need hedges...hedges against the night’.”

With ‘Hedges Against The Night’ The New Shining manage to create an even more complete

album, with songs that are more compact and with a better sound. Energy and emotion are

the most important elements in the music by The New Shining. And despite the fact that you’d

classify their music as rock, there’s so much pop and melody in the music, that it’s hard to put

a specific label onto it.

 

When a band builds a wall of sound and uses lots of melodies, you run the risk of getting a

production that’s too full. “We were looking for someone who could put all this musical

information into a transparent sound”. Whilst looking for the right person, The New Shining

quickly got into a luxury position, as quite a couple of producers were interested in doing this

job. Then Erwin Musper (Bon Jovi, Metallica, Anouk) contacted the band of his own accord and

told of his enthusiasm for the songs. He also came with a clear plan on how to handle things,

and then the decision was quickly made. The band took off to the USA and hit the recording

studios. During the recordings the atmosphere was great, you can hear it all through the

album: pure pleasure! “Erwin guaranteed a good sound and a structured recording schedule,

so that we could concentrate on the instruments. It turned out to be a real advantage to be far

away from home, far from the day-to-day hassles.

 

With ‘Hedges Against the Night’, The New Shining is totally ready for a new year. They’ll be

playing, for example, with rock legend Golden Earring, in different venues all across Holland

(HMH, 013, Zeeland Hallen etc.). And of course they’ll be touring between several clubs and

festivals. When you see The New Shining play live, you’ll know that this band is as good ‘live’

as they are on the album. The New Shining guarantees you a stage full of passion and energy,

combined with a wall of sound.

After the single ‘ShadowCast’ is released on 14 September, the album ‘Hedges Against The

Night’ will be in the stores from 12 October onwards.
