REVIEWER: RAYMOND "EVERYBODY LOVES RAY" COONEN
When I bought the first Soul Doctor album in 2001 I was pleased. Soul Doctor's self titled album was a great hard rocking album. This album contains some fine tunes as the Foreigner cover "Soul Doctor" (the reason the band named that way), "Goodbye", "Before The Night Is Over", "What Do You Want" and the best song from the album "Down The Blvd". Singer Tommy Heart sounded even better than he did on the last Fair Warning album. The guitar parts where in good hands with Chris Lyne.
In 2002 “All Systems Go” was released. Nothing from the sparkling hard rock songs was left and from that point I lost the band out of sight.
Meanwhile Soul Doctor released two studio albums "For a Fistful of Dollars" in 2005 and "Blood Runs Cold" two years later. A live registration simply called "That’s Live!" has been released in 2008.
So now in the end of 2009, begin 2010 Soul Doctor is back with a new album "Way Back To The Bone". Hoping on a album like the debut album I gave Soul Doctor another try. Well I must say "Way Back To The Bone" is indeed like the debut a heavy hard rock album. A bit like Gotthard's "Need to Believe". With that said I also think there’s a big difference between these two albums. All songs from "Way Back To The Bone" are on the same level. There are no highlights nor disappointments. All intro’s sounds super, the voice of Tommy Heart is stronger than ever. But for me that isn’t enough. There are no songs, no melodies that stick in your head all day long. The album has no track that grabs you by the balls if you know what I mean?
"Way Back To The Bone" is not a bad album. Absolutely not… I think if I hear the songs in a live set they blown me away… I will see you in the crowd.
