REVIEWER: RAYMOND KRUIJEN
For many of you the name Kimberley Dahme does not ring a bell. However, for fans of AOR (Adult Orientated Rock) and Classis Rock this lady will not be a stranger. As from 2002 she handles bass guitar in the Classic Rock band BOSTON. Those who cannot recall their timeless hits like ‘More than a feeling’, ‘Don’t look back’ or ‘Amanda’ have probably lived as hermits and never listened to the radio!
‘You make me believe’ is the 5th album in 10 years by this trueborn musician from Nashville. For this release, she applied herself to writing her own songs. Although Boston’s Gary Pihl and Tom Scholz contributed to this CD, the result is no Boston replica! Dahme’s songs vary from Country to Rock and back to Blues. Songs like ‘Can’t a girl change her mind’, ‘Rock you like a baby’, ‘Love don’t leave me now’ and ‘You make me believe’ (impressive ode to her fans) are beautiful up-tempo country/rock songs.
At ‘It takes two to fall’, obviously Blues influences prevail and prove that this “Dame” can turn her hand to anything. ‘Lighthouse’ has a somewhat dark feel, it is dedicated to Boston singer Brad Delp, who passed away in 2007.
With this release of ‘With you’ we are now counting 3 versions. The first on her debut album of ’99. In 2002 this song deserved its space (after a minimum of editing) on the Boston CD ‘Corporate America’.
For ‘You make me believe’ Tom Scholz returned the song to Kimberley, completed with his unambiguous guitar sound. ‘No question’ is somewhat a stranger on this album as this song is totally a capella, however, Dahme is qualified enough to have her voice fit all kinds of different music styles. The pitch of her voice can hit high’s and low’s like a roller coaster with emotion and passion as common denominators. The proof of emotion in its purest form is delivered by ‘The only man’. A ballad loaded with feeling and compassion.
'You make me believe' was already released in the US in 2009. Later that year the album got his European release through Escape Music. Escape packed the album in a new "jacket" and gave it a new title. 'Can't a girl change her mind' was born.
Conclusion: this album has a bright spectrum of moods: it rocks, contains beautiful ballads and powerful blues songs. ‘You make me believe’ is the result of merging believes and emotion, performed by an artist to the backbone… Kimberley Dahme.
