REVIEWER: RAYMOND "EVERYBODY LOVES RAY" COONEN
Night Ranger is one of those typical 80's American rock bands that never were so popular in Europe like they were in there home country, but unbelievable popular in Asia and sold out every seat in the house in Japan.
Night Ranger’s legendary hits "Sister Christian," (#2)"(You Can Still) Rock in America,"(#15) "Don't Tell Me You Love Me"(#4) Sentimental Street (#3) and The Secret Of My Succes (#12 in the mainstream rock top 100) made them one of beloved bands in America and these hits expanded their ever-growing fanbase. Night Ranger’s contributions are now featured in multiple entertainment realms, including the Broadway musical “Rock of Ages” and hit videogame series "Rock Band" and "Guitar Hero".
The remaining founding members of the band have impressive resumes. Jack Blades was also in the supergroup Damn Yankees with Ted Nugent and Tommy Shaw. His songwriting credits include Aerosmith, Cher, Alice Cooper and Ozzy, to name just a few. Brad Gillis appeared on Ozzy’s “Speak of the Devil” live album, while drummer Kelly Keagy has had a successful solo career of his own.
Somewhere In California is the culmination of the band's work to this date and celebrates the band's 30th anniversary with incredible melodic cuts and hard rocking numbers. Night Ranger's new album has everything the fans could ask for!
After listening to the album I have to say it’s the perfect soundtrack for making a roadtrip. Starting full speed with the autographic and fresh sounding opener Growing Up In California. Excellent song for driving too fast on a highway with open windows and the volume up. You can keep your foot on the pedal with Lay it On Me. For Night Ranger standards a very agressive and powerful kick ass song. But hey, don’t think that it ends with these two killer tracks. No, try not so sing along with Bye,Bye Baby (Not Tonight). Night Ranger took the inspiration of the longer lasting track on Somewhere In California (6:46) from the late seventies and pimped it to a nowaday's tune. A classic hard rock track with a intro like the Doors. Another song that reaches over the six minutes is the epic Live For Today (6:04)
Jack Blades and his gang slows down for the brilliant ballad Times Of Our Lives. Then hit the gas pedal once more with the big chorus song No Time To Lose Ya, End Of The Day and the finisher Say It With Love.
Night Ranger made with their 2007 release Hole In The Sun a solid base and with Somewhere In California the Night Ranger is back on duty. And Europe watch out… Night Ranger is coming to get ya this summer...!
