Mark Spiro, hmmm… Mark Spiro, did you ever hear that name before? Well, for somebody who doesn’t listen to melodic rock music and don’t want to know every fact and names behind the songs this name won’t ring a bell. For those who adore the this genre but never heard before of Mark Spiro… Well, a little shame on you…just a little...
Mark Spiro is a well known songwriter and established award winning producer. Over two decades he managed to receive 45 gold and platinum records, and also released six solo albums. His productions have been represented on records that have sold over 100 million records, worldwide. For example he wrote Cheap Trick’s Mighty Wings for the Top Gun soundtrack. Other artists what have asked Mark Spiro for help on a song are Heart, John Waite, Giant, Bad English, REO Speedwagon, MR. Big, Winger Steve Perry (Journey), David Lee Roth (Van Halen) Mike Reno (Loverboy) and Rick Springfield.
So you might think that Mark Spiro can write and record great melodic rock songs for his solo albums as well. In my own collection I have two cd’s from Mr. Spiro: Devotion (1997) and The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of (1999). And to be honest out of 26 songs I think 5 of them that are really cool. Tracks as I’ll Be There and Can You Hear The Night kick ass! I hoped that with his new solo album I could change my mind but on his latest creation It’s a Beautiful Life there is even not 1 song that pops out. It's a light poppy album that leans a little bit to the country side but it has nothing to do with melodic rock. You might compare it to Bryan Adams' latest studio album 11. Fine songs to listen to but no outstanding songs. If you are searching for one great rock track… I’m sorry to disappoint you. You won’t find it here. I think a reason for this is that Mark Spiro played all instruments himself or come from keyboards.
Hey Raymond, isn’t there anything that is good on the album? Well, the songwriting is great… the lyrics are way better than those from the new pop stars you hear on the radio nowadays. If there comes a day you have enough of all that guitar violence then take a listen to It’s A Beautiful Life. Maybe then you'll like it...
